eBay This is a super rare and non-traditional Haida silkscreen print by acclaimed Northwest Native American artist, Richard Adkins. It measures 21″ x 23″ and is signed. It is also numbered and part of an edition of 225. Dated 1979, it is one of Rick’s first prints and is truly a collector’s piece. It is titled “Our Hearts Sing” and represents two sculpin in an infinity design, representing the persistence of the Haida people. Sculpin is a family crest amongst the Haida. Rick Adkins comes from a talented family of jewelers; his brothers are Alvin Adkins and James Adkins. In 1970, he studied under Freda Diesing. In 1971, he worked with Richard Yeltatzie. Between 1979 and 1980, Rick attended Emily Carr College of Art in Vancouver. That same year he produced his first bronze sculpture. He began working with wood in 1983, assisting his brother Alvin in producing a 34-foot totem pole for the Museum of Northern British Columbia in Prince Rupert. In the late 1980s, he studied with Bill Reid, and assisted in the production of a silver box. It was during this time that he also studied under Robert Davidson. Rick has exhibited at the National Gallery in Ottawa, the BC Provincial Museum, and the Royal Ontario Museum. He was featured in the ‘Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 2’ exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, 2005. Rick’s jewellery is highly distinctive and often contains single hatching and oxidization. A sculpin is a type of fish that belongs to the superfamily Cottoidea in the order Scorpaeniformes. Sculpins occur in many types of habitat, including ocean and freshwater zones. They live in rivers, submarine canyons, kelp forests, and shallow littoral habitat types, such as tidepools. Sculpins are benthic fish, dwelling on the bottoms of water bodies. Their pectoral fins are smooth on the upper edge and webbed with sharp rays along the lower edge, a modification that makes them specialized for gripping the substrate.
