This is a 1949 Vacheron & Constantin 45mm reference number 4348 ultra rare (HOLLY GRAIL) all aluminum pocket watch, presented in 1949. An experiment in metals, this watch is composed of case, Breguet hands and numbers, dial, and movement plates, entirely from aluminum. Only essential parts made from traditional materials, like the balance wheel, train, escapment, etc. Even the crown and bow are made from aluminum. Movement is 17J. Only 271 examples were produced between 1945 and 1950, making this a truly ultra rare watch in a culture where this word is over-used on a daily basis.THIS IS THE ONLY ONE FOR SALE ANYWHERE, I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE OFFERED IN MORE THAN 15 YEARS. THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A MASTERPIECE IN WATCH MAKING. Year of manufacture is 1949. V&C Certificate Included, see pics. Model/reference number is 4348. Movement# 307XXX The movement is also mostly aluminum and was initially commissioned in 1937 as a custom-order by Birks Jewelers of Montreal. It required two years of research to develop a suitable alloy. Less than 300 watches were ever made, up to around 1955, although stocks existed until the early 1960’s. The whole things weights just 20 grams! According to factory sources, 271 pieces were constructed for Birks on commission by ALCOA subsidiary, the Northern Aluminum Company which later became the Aluminum Company of Canada (ALCAN). ALCAN used them for retirement and presentation gifts, while ALCOA VIP presentation pieces are also known. The factory must have retained some stocks because unadorned watches were available on special order until the mid 1950’s. As well, I’ve seen some used as diplomatic presentation watches and one for the retirement of an employee from a Swiss chemicals company. The official V&C designation for this watch is Reference #4348. At the time this watch was being developed in 1937, there were no aluminum alloys capable of the fine machining required. Once Vacheron & Constantin solved this problem, I can only wonder who else benefited from their formula. Aluminum was just becoming a strategic material for the allies following the German success with duralumin. HUGELY RARE AND SOUGHT AFTER TIMEPIECE FOR THE RIGHT COLLECTOR.
