Short Description of Tansy Herb (Tanecetum Vulgare): Tansy has a long history of use. It was first recorded as being cultivated by the ancient Greeks for medicinal purposes. In the 8th century AD it was grown in the herb gardens of Charlemagne and by Benedictine monks of the Swiss monastery of Saint Gall. Tansy was used to treat intestinal worms, rheumatism, digestive problems, fevers, sores, and to bring out measles. For many years, tansy has been used as a medicinal herb despite its toxicity. 19th-century Irish folklore suggests bathing in a solution of tansy and salt as a cure for joint pain. A bitter tea made with tansy flowers has been used for centuries as an anthelmintic to treat parasitic worm infestations, and tansy cakes were traditionally eaten during Lent because it was believed that eating fish during Lent caused intestinal worms. The flowering tops and dried leaves are generally used in herbal medicinal preparations to treat and cure a number of ailments. It can either be consumed orally or used in topical applications. Only the upper leafy part of the stem is cut off during flowering about 20 cm from the top down. From 5 kg of fresh stalks 1 kg of dry ones is obtained. The herb is dried at a temperature below 30 °C. Tansy Herb is tradionally used in/for*: Externally:Europeans and colonial Americans used common tansy in a face wash to lighten and purify skin;tansy is used as a poultice on swellings and some eruptive skin diseases;it is also used externally to kill lice, fleas and scabies;applied topically to treat varicose veins, bruises, swelling and sties;applied as a poultice, the herb is a natural treatment for skin infections;can be used to relieve sprains and reduce swelling.tansy is placed on window sills to repel flies; sprigs are placed in bed linen to drive away pests, and it has been used as an ant repellent. Internally:Leaves and flowering tops are anthelmintic, antispasmodic, bitter, carminative, emenagogue, stimulant and tonic;Tansy has carminative properties that help to improve general digestion;Tansy is also regarded to be an effective appetite stimulant;common digestive conditions like flatulence and dyspepsia;it has also been used to treat stomach ulcers, cramping, pain and gallbladder issues;help treat intestinal worms;it is considered to be an especially effective remedy for numerous intestinal parasites;Tansy is known to have powerful emenagogue properties;effectively improves blood circulation;it can help stimulate menstruation in women who suffer from irregular periods;Tansy might have some value in treating kidney illness and helping eradicate kidney stones;Tansy was historically used to treat painful joint conditions like arthritis and rheumatism;occasionally used to treat other types of pain like migraines, headaches, sciatica and nerve pain;eases stomach disorders and intestinal spasms and reduces intestinal gas;may give relief from anxiety, hysteria and nervousness;may reduces the recurrence of Epileptic seizures;it is thought to help in the prevention of migraines;used as an anthelmintic for inflammation of the urinary tract;used as enemas in a mixture with wormwood and chamomile flowers. What does Tansy Herb taste like? Strong and bitter, somewhat lemon-flavoured. How to use/consume Dried Tansy Herb? Infusion/Tea: A tea infusion can be prepared by pouring one cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoonful of the dried tansy. Leave to infuse for 10 – 15 minutes and drink twice daily. Externally:Half a teaspoon (2 g) of the herb or 8 g of a mixture obtained from equal amounts of tansy herb, wormwood and chamomile flowers is boiled with 500 ml of water for 10-15 minutes. After cooling, strain, use for enemas.
