Phone-Mate 800S Vintage 1970’s Reel-to-Reel Telephone Answering Machine | Works & Has Messages Noted Condition Issues. o Incomplete, missing the phone attachment and the power cord (but it can be powered by 4D batteries just fine) o Some light scratches and scuffing on the front glossy plastic o When rewinding or fast forwarding, the undriven spool doesn’t brake, so the tape gets a little loose withing the reels, but after testing multiple time, it has never caused a problem and may have come like this from the factory o Seems to have a hard time maintaining constant playback speed when standing upright (see the video of this listing) o The reels rotate slightly wobbly, and seem to touch something inside making a scuffing sound, but doesn’t seem to affect playback o Small crack in the battery pack from the force of the springs pushing the contacts together (should be attended to) Highlights. o Tested and works (at least the playback function does o The recording function was not tested as I didn’t want to overwrite the original greeting o Although the list of condition issues sounds ominous, let me assure the buyer that the item is actually in excellent condition considering this iis an almost 50 year old consumer product that saw at least some use back in the 1970’s o Includes the original microphone, so recording of a new greeting is possible o Super clean battery compartment o Front side plastic is still glossy (in the listing photos, a couple of them look like the surface is terrible, but the alligator skin like texture seen in the photos is actually a reflection of the inside foil of the light box o Based on how well it functions in playback mode, I would expect the recording function to operate just a flawlessly o The design is so 1970’s it hurts, and as a child of the 1970’s, I absolutely love it!
