Dick, Philip K. THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE. New York, NY: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1962. 1st edition. With no mention of edition or printing noted on the copyright page, and with gutter code D36 on page 239, both which indicate that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing of this book. This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: there may have been a later printing of THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE that was published in this hardcover format, although I have never seen one. There was at least one book club edition of THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE that very much resembles the 1st edition. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing of THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. Philip Kindred Dick and his twin sister Jane Charlotte Dick were born six weeks premature on December 16, 1928. The death of Jane, six weeks later, on January 26, 1929, profoundly affected Philip K. Dick’s life, leading to the recurrent motif of the “phantom twin” in his books. He died in Santa Ana, California in 1982. Philip K. Dick was a novelist, a short story writer, and essayist, and a philosopher; most of his works were science fiction. He explored philosophical, sociological, political, and metaphysical themes in his fiction which was dominated by monopolistic corporations, authoritarian governments, and altered states consciousness. He also used his personal experiences to address the nature of drug abuse, paranoia, schizophrenia, theology, metaphysics, and transcendental experiences. The novel THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE (offered here) used the science fictional trope of alternate history, which earned him a Hugo Award for Best Novel. Eleven major films were based on his works, including “Blade Runner,” “Total Recall,” “A Scanner Darkly,” “Minority Report,” “Screamers,” and several others. Dick’s family later moved to San Francisco. He spent a couple of years in Washington, D.C. with his mother, who had divorced his father. They then moved back to California. Dick states that he read his first science fiction magazine when he was twelve. He attended Berkeley High School and was in the same graduating class as the great science fiction and fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin, although they did not know each other at the time. He attended the University of California, Berkeley for a short time. In his studies (mostly on his own) of philosophy, he described himself as “a cosmic pantheist,” believing in a universe only as an extension of God. Later he came to the conclusion that, in a certain sense, the world is not entirely real and that there is no way to confirm whether the universe is truly there. Philip K. Dick was married five times, to Jeanette Marlin, Kleo Apostolides, Anne Williams Rubinstein, Nancy Hackett, and Leslie (Tessa) Busby. He had three children, Laura Archer, Isolde Freya, and Christopher Kenneth. Dick sold his first story in 1951 and wrote full-time from that point. His debut novel was SOLAR LOTTERY, published in 1955. He also attempted to write “mainstream” fiction, but after having most of his manuscripts returned, he stopped trying it and went back to science fiction. After winning the 1963 Hugo Award for THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE (offered here), he was lauded as a genius in the science fiction world, but the mainstream literary world was unappreciative. In his later years Dick was poor and sometimes almost destitute. He wrote: “When I was ill, Robert Heinlein offered his help, anything he could do, and we had never met; he would phone me to cheer me up and to see how I was doing. He wanted to buy me an electric typewriter, God bless him — one of the few true gentlemen in the world. I don’t agree with many of the ideas he puts forth in his writing, but that is neither here nor there. One time when I owed the IRS a lot of money and couldn’t raise it, Heinlein loaned the money to me. I think a great deal of him and his wife; I dedicated a book to them in appreciation. Robert Heinlein is a fine-looking man, very impressive and very military in stance; you can tell he has a military background, even to the haircut. He knows I’m a flipped-out freak and still he helped me and my wife when we were in trouble. That is the best in humanity, there; that is who and what I love.” Toward the end of his life, Dick befriended budding science fiction writers K.W. Jeter, James Blaylock, and Tim Powers. In the early part of 1974, Dick apparently experienced a series of hallucinations in which he saw a pink beam of intelligence, geometric patterns, and brief pictures of Jesus. At that point he claimed he began to live parallel lives, one as himself, and the other as “Thomas,” a Christian persecuted by Romans in the 1st century, CE. Dick’s stories typically focused on the fragile nature of what is real and in the construction of a personal identity. Many of his stories include characters who slowly discover that their everyday world is actually an illusion constructed by powerful external entities or vast political conspiracies. He himself identified one major them of his work as the question,” What constitutes the authentic human being?” The Philip K. Dick Award was founded by Thomas Disch with assistance from David G. Hartwell, Paul S. Williams, and Charles N. Brown. The award honors the previous year’s best science fiction paperback novel published in the U.S. Philip K. Dick was the author of such great and famous books as VULCAN’S HAMMER, DR. FUTURITY, THE COSMIC PUPPETS, SOLAR LOTTERY, MARY AND THE GIANT, THE WORLD JONES MADE, THE MAN WHO JAPED, THE BROKEN BUBBLE, TIME OUT OF JOINT, CONFESSIONS OF A CRAP ARTIST, THE MAN WHOSE TEETH WERE ALL EXACTLY ALIKE, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE (offered here), MARTIAN TIME-SLIP, DR. Dick is honored by being named the first science fiction writer to be included in The Library of America Series. Clearly Philip K. Dick was (and remains) one of the best, most important, most famous, and most collectible science fiction authors of all time. From the dust jacket: “ . . . In a hilltop cabin, his ‘high castle,’ surrounded by barbed wire, a solitary writer conceives an imaginary account of history — in which FDR was not assassinated, in which Italy betrayed the Axis countries and the Allies won World War II. His novel, THE GRASSHOPPER LIES HEAVY is of course banned in the eastern portion of postwar America, dominated as it is by Nazi occupation forces. But in the Pacific States of America, which Japanese victors control and where the Oriental race is superior despite its puppet white government, where the I Ching — the ancient Chinese Book of Changes which predicts the future and understands the present — has replaced the Bible and a more permissive, humane philosophy dominates, the novel is tolerated by the authorities. And its incredible, fantastic image of a ‘mythical’ postwar world is glimpsed against the ‘real’ world of the present . . . THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, A NOVEL by Philip K. Dick . . . Against this background of a globe controlled by Germany and Japan, Philip K. Dick tells this bizarre, hilarious, terrifying, electrifying tale: of a dealer in historic U.S. trivia who maintains an exclusive antique shop in San Francisco; of a Jewish artisan hiding from the Reich racial laws and of his estranged wife languishing in the backwater country of the Rocky Mountain States; of a traveling ‘Swedish Businessman’ who is much more than he seems; of a Gestapo killer sent on the track of the man in the high castle . . . Mr. Dick’s vision of contemporary America is of a world that never was. But it might have been — and his brilliantly satiric image combines with the high suspense of his story to make THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE an uncommonly original entertainment . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . Philip K. Dick lives, with his wife and children, in ‘a Campbell-Wong glass-sided house in the country north of San Francisco with a library of Jung and Zen Buddhism, cherry plum trees, and central black-iron open fireplace, a passion for local fish and game, Paul Tillich, and science fiction.’ Mr. Dick is the author of a number of science fiction stories and novels, and his novel, EYE IN THE SKY, was selected by Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine as one of the best fifty science fiction works of its decade . . . “ _______________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON’T KNOW, don’t try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE book in a GOOD+ to VERY GOOD- dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black full-cloth binding with red lettering on the spine of the book and on the front of the book. The book has the correct 1st issue gutter code D36 on page 239. The yellow publisher’s topstain show a touch of tanning, but is still clearly the correct yellow in color. The book is not spine-leaned; also, unusual thus. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct price of $3.95 on the upper front flap. The front panel of the dust jacket is a combination of white and light blue lettering with a red and white rising sun and with a black swastika on a black and white background. The spine panel of the dust jacket has blue and black lettering on a largely white background. The front panel of the dust jacket is nice and bright. The rear panel of the dust jacket has a great contemporary photograph of Philip K. Dick. The dust jacket has undergone some archival (no tape) reinforcement and restoration on the inside of the dust jacket that has been accomplished by a professional paper conservationist. There is clearly some color touch-up on the dust jacket, especially at the upper and lower portions of the spine panel of the dust jacket. The great and famous and iconic dust jacket artwork is by the artist Robert Galster. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I’m not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings.
