It is great for 1-string to 3-string applications and two can be attached together, like the Nd144-D Double, and used simultaneously to accommodate 4-string to 6-string applications with the possibility of left to right stereo operation. Read on for more details… The Nd144-S “Single” model is the original electromagnetic cigar box guitar pickup used for 1-string to 3-string applications. This model is great for hiding within a 1×2 maple neck beneath the lid and has extremely versatile dimensions for unlimited uses. Note from the builder: I use this homemade pickup in all of my stringed instrument builds—I have included some of the builds as examples in the photos; you can view others at my Junk Shop Audio site. It is more versatile than any other pickup that I have seen on the market and has more applications for concealed installation than flatbuckers. As singles, they hide easily in a maple 1”x2” neck-through design without compromising the stability of the instrument. For example, I recently installed three of them in a cigar box guitar in a Fender pickup configuration. As doubles, two attached together, I have installed them beneath the top of six-string acoustic guitars, without a trace, as well as in the sound hole. Alternatively, I have wired them for stereo sound in electric guitars and steel guitars. In short, this style of pickup has allowed me to build instruments that would have been impossible with a single coil, humbucker or flatbucker. *Pricing is for a single pickup, as shown in photo number two.* The Junk Shop Audio Nd144 has a stripped-down, compact design and can be installed in a number of creative ways—in some cases, it can even be hidden completely for a smooth, uncut top appearance to better preserve original cigar box artwork. This pickup has a lower output level than traditional single coils/humbuckers, but has an excellent signal to noise ratio when grounded properly and performs best when wired directly to the output jack, as potentiometers (volume and tone controls) commonly used in guitar construction lack compatibility. The coolest feature inherent to this pickup’s design (in 6-string applications—two pickups) is the ability to split the two coils, one in the left channel and the other in the right, to create string movement within the stereo field. For instance, strings four through six would be heard in the left channel and strings one through three would be heard in the right channel. These coils mix easily on a soundboard or between two amplifiers and the guitar will sound as if it is moving left to right through the stereo field, as the strings are strummed from the sixth string to the first. Doubled Nd144-S pickups (as shown in picture one) can be wired parallel, either in mono or stereo or in series and the addition of a double pole, double throw (DPDT) switch in the stereo application, allows the user to switch strings 1-3 and strings 4-6 from right to left and vice versa.
