Bath Iron Works (BIW) Bath, Maine “Bath-Built is Best-Built.” —————————————————————————– When traveling over the Kennebec Bridge one of the most noticeable sights is the big BIW Crane. Bath Iron Works (BIW) is a major shipyard located on the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. BIW was foundered in 1865 by General Thomas W. Hyde, a Bath native who served in the Civil War. He produced windlasses and other iron hardware for wooden ships built in Bath’s many shipyards. Bath Iron Works was incorporated in 1884 for iron shipbuilding. In 1890 BIW won its first contract for two iron Navy gunboats and in 1892 its first commercial steel passenger steamer City of Lowell. In the 1890s, the company built several yachts for wealthy sailors. In 1899 began construction of its only battle ship Georgia built at BIW. The company continued to rely on Navy contracts between 1905 and 1917 and built fishing trawlers, freighters, and yachts throughout the first half of the century. BIW was at peak production during World War II launching a destroyer every 17 days. In 1981, Falcon Transport ordered two tankers, the last commercial vessels built by BIW. In 1995, Bath Iron Works was bought by General Dynamics. Since the completion of Hull #1 in 1890, BIW has been awarded more than 425 shipbuilding contracts, including 245 military ships (mostly destroyers and frigates for the US Navy) and over 160 private yachts and commercial vessels. MacGregor Jr. Watercolors the Junkyard Artist William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self-taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May,2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA
