Uranium glass “mermaid glass” earrings set into art nouveau style antiqued silver stampings. Glows bright green under a blacklight indicating the presence of uranium in the glass. The blue green opal uranium glass cabochons are 10x8mm and the drop in the earrings are about an inch. The hooks are nickel-free 925 sterling silver, and the stamping are silver-plated brass. The uranium content causes the glass to fluoresce bright green under a UV blacklight. Uranium dioxide was added to glass because it produces brilliant, beautiful colors unmatched by any other glassmaking method. I strive to create and source jewelry that looks as beautiful in natural light as it does under a blacklight. Uranium glass is very slightly radioactive and will sometimes register on a Geiger counter. It is not dangerous to wear or handle. Jewelry pieces will register barely above background radiation if they register at all. A piece of uranium glass jewelry has less radiation than a banana (Source – Systematic Radiological Assessment of Exemptions for Source and Byproduct Materials [NUREG 1717]). Uranium glass is identified with a UV blacklight, and it’s only uranium glass if the item is truly glass, not another material, and fluoresces the telltale bright neon green. If a piece of glass glows bright green in UV light then it contains uranium. No other material or element in glass has that effect. Other jewelry components such as resin, plasic, enamel, paint, acrylic, glow-in-the-dark materials, some gemstones, and even adhesive can fluoresce green like uranium, so it is imperative for a collector of such glass in jewelry to make sure the glowing item is truly glass. Sometimes an item can glow a dull green rather than bright neon green, and that is due to manganese rather than uranium. The uranium glass in jewelry is the same glass found in the depression-era glassware that is popular with collectors. I treasure hunt all over the world for vintage uranium glass pieces to use in my jewelry, as well as new pieces from Czech Republic. I specialize in sourcing old art deco jewelry components and faceted glass stones. I also very much enjoy finding vintage uranium glass jewelry pieces. I represent my vintage pieces to the best of my knowledge with all the research I can muster, but from time to time I may get something incorrect, however, I strive to avoid any misrepresentation and will designate if I am unsure of something. All of my own pieces are made with the greatest care and love and have a lifetime guarantee for repair, including free replacement of damage/loss to the glass stones. I take great care to ensure that all of my items are true uranium glass. Please note that because my rings are glass they are susceptible to breakage and may not be suitable for every day wear. Despite this, I have great reports from thousands of my customers on the longevity. I am happy to replace stones that break at no charge, however, a select few are extremely rare and cannot be replaced. If you are interested in a ring for daily wear such as an engagement or wedding ring, but are concerned about breakage, I highly recommend one of my spinel rings.
