Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a somewhat rare and very unique 1930’s / 40’s era 52A model dynamic microphone currently set at High impedance made by an American microphone company called Audio Research Incorporated based out of New York. This very early dynamic microphone is a monster being 3 1’3 inches wide X 3 3/4 inches tall X 2 1/4 inches deep. It’s extremely rugged and built like a tank having an all metal painted construction. It comes with an old 1940’s era Astatic E^G model desk stand. I have to be honest….I know nothing of this company or the microphone they sold? I have never even seen one until now. If you do know anything about this company or it’s History…I’m all ears? I have only seen this model in an old 1940’s catalog as seen in pic # 2. That’s it. This Audio Research Inc 52A model has a brass body with the original brown paint. The design is interested but not over the top by any means. Very conservative looking but still has a lot of character. This was an early example of a dynamic mic. A very basic layout and the best part is that it still actually works. Somehow it has defied the odds and has all the original components. The mic is quite heavy as well being at least 2 to 3 pounds. The 52A reminds me a lot of the early RCA dynamic microphones of that time right down to the color. If you want a mic you can use on stage that has an old school “rockabilly” tone then this will certainly do the trick. It has a very loud signal and is void of any bass. It has an omni-directional pattern picking up a bit more background noise. I should note that there are 3 screws in the rear of the mic that you’ll attach cable / wires to. They are not marked in any way but one is for positive. The other is for negative and the third is for ground but I don’t know which is which so you’ll want the proper equipment to test with to find out the order so that you don’t ruin the mic. Once that is established merely attach the wires and you are in business. You’ll see with the detailed pics provided that the mic has typical lite wear. Mostly paint loss but the mic is free of any dents, fractures or corrosion. The front grill is fee of any dents as well and the inner screen looks great. Nothing loose inside or out. The badge up top is completely legible and looks good. To access the inside of the mic there are two specialized screws on the front grill. Mic is an easy 7 cosmetically on a scale of 1 – 10. This microphone has threading that allows you to mount this on any standard microphone desk or floor stand so you won’t need any special hardware to use this. A nice desk is provided however. The stand is a 1940’s /50’s era Astatic brand E6G desk stand. This model was a detachable desk stand that has a painted aluminum base with detachable painted wooden handle allowing the user of the mic to quickly release the mic attached and walk around using the handle to support the mic with the twist of the handle. This design was very practical for it’s time as very few people actually held those older mics in their hand. It was considered taboo so the mic stand handle was a more civilized and practical option. The stands wooden riser seats on the base via a small hole where the riser sits. There is plenty of tension once applied. Easy to remove once twisted half way and lifted upwards. Often the top of the wood handle is stripped out from years of use making it hard for any mic to screw onto the handle but this handle is excellent. The top wooden riser has the Kona Brown painted finish and looks very nice while the bottom painted aluminum base is black shows the same amount of wear which is almost none. Please let the detailed pics be your guide. The stand has the 3 original rubber pads and they are in excellent shape. Stand is appx 6 inches tall X 5 inches wide. With mic on top it’s appx 9 1/2 inches tall. Mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have if you don’t like the desk stand provided. Display this old beauty with pride anywhere in the home, office or studio. She’ll do any user justice for general broadcasting or singing as well. As with all my vintage microphones… I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not…I have a no hassle return policy.
