Lacking volume two. New edition. With a frontispiece and folding map to the rear of volume one. Collated complete. Gibbon offers an explanation for the fall of the Roman Empire, a task made difficult by a lack of comprehensive written sources. Covering the period from 98 to 1590, the peak of the Roman Empire, the history of early Christianity and its emergence as the Roman state religion, the Fall of the Western Roman Empire, the rise of Genghis Khan and Tamerlane and the fall of Byzantium, as well as discussions on the ruins of Ancient Rome. According to Gibbon, the Roman Empire succumbed to barbarian invasions in large part due to the gradual loss of civic virtue among its citizens. Written by Edward Gibbon, an English essayist, historian, and politician best known for this important work. Previously held in the library of Sir Charles Warwick Bampfylde, 5th Baronet of Poltimore in Devon, a British politician who served twice as Member of Parliament for Exeter. CONDITION Bound in full calf. Externally, worn with rubbing and light loss to the extremities. Cracks to the joints with the odd mark to the boards. Fading to the spine with the spine label lost to volumes one, four, five, six, seven, nine, and eleven. With loss to the spine labels of the remaining volumes. Front board detached to volume one with front joint held by cords only to volume twelve. Hinges starting but firm to most volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. The odd small closed tear to the page edges. Light age toning to the extremities with scattered spotting to the endpapers. Previous owner’s bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine – Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed – Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good – Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good – Meaning not very good.
